Picked this old Coca-Cola ad up from an antiques shop in Gloucester, MA, a month or so back. There was quite a collection of old retro magazine ad's in the place. This Coke one took my fancy. The illustration would probably be replaced by some slick polished photography if it was to be done these days. I like it's style, just need to get a frame for it.

OutSmart

The OutSmart project is the brainchild of illustrator Gemma Randall who put a call out to fellow illustrators to produce a piece of work based around the quirky little Smart Car. Above is my effort depicting the smart car and driver, chilled and relaxed, up on a cloud away from the congestion and road rage below, while the sun shines and beams across at them.

Currently there's a blog supporting the project with a full website about to go live real soon. This proposal features some great talent and prints of a select few, including mine I'm pleased to say will be available at the Smart Festival on the 4th September then through the website store. Unless they all get snapped up at the festival.

Here's my effort for this years 'Decked' exhibition which will be taking place at the Coningsby Gallery from the 15th August. I do seem to be obsessed with drawing/painting characters in little boats, battling the elements of the open water and the creatures of the deep. Have a look at my work for Ammo magazine for another example. Great to spend some time on this, stepping away from the computer and working with paint for a change, I really should do it more often.

There's a private view on the 18th August which I'm going to get myself down to, so I might see you there if you drop by. Some of my work is showcased in the latest issue of MacUser (7th May - Vol 26 No10) Features a few pieces of my work, accompanied by a little waffle about me and my processes. Always good to see your work in print and out in the world. There's also a preview of the new iphone OS, which may be of interest to those who own one. I don't at present, but it's on my wish list. Here's some new work I did recently for Cincinnati Magazine. Thought it might be interesting to include a few of the rough ideas I had to start. The illo is for a short piece about Ilya Finkelshteyn the new principal cellist for the Cincinnati Symphony. He also happens to have a huge passion for golf, so the brief was to privide a mix of the two.

Below are two versions of the final illustration, I prefer the all red background. Dennis at Cincinnati decided to go with the other featuring the colours of the Russian flag.

Tuesday night was the open evening of the Association of Illustrators ‘images 33’ exhibition at the London Collage of Communication, south of the Thames in Elephant & Castle. The UK’s leading illustration competition dedicated to showcasing the best of British contemporary illustration.

Sadly my illustration didn’t win a Gold, Silver or Bronze award on the evening. Just having a piece of work on display in a room full of work by other illustrators, who I’ve looked up to for so many years was award enough for me. The exhibition continues until the 12th August, admission is free. More details can be found here. So if your in the area please check it out. here's a few pictures from the evening.

Just a quick one to let you know that one of my illustrations 'Grow your own' was selected for 'Images 33' this years Association of Illustrators annual of the best of British contemporary illustration. Accompanying the release of the book will be an awards evening and exhibition taking place this Tuesday 28th July. For more details about the exhibition click here. Needless to say I'm pretty chuffed at being selected, hopefully I'll be in on the touring exhibition too.

New Work

The latest issue of the subscription magazine Benhealth has just been printed and features a couple of new contributions from myself. The first accompanies an article about the 'Change For Life' incentive, aimed towards families to make a change towards a healthier lifestyle. The idea for the illustration was from a group collaboration, essentially the family dropping all the bad and unhealthy activities and raising the flag for a healthier life.

The second illustration is a bit of a change in style for me. A full on mixed media piece. I used pencils, charcoal, acrylics, ink and some photo's for added texture. The illustration accompanies an article about heart disease and how through lifestyle changes you can lower your risk.

Mail Me Art

The Mail Me Art book by Darren Di Lieto is out on the bookshelves. It's full of some really cool pieces by some great illustrators. I feel pretty privileged to be included along side them. It's not one of my best pieces, but it was fun to get involved with the project and see some of the other submissions in print.

Artist and TV presenter Tony Hart died today. He was a pretty big influence on me as a kid growing up and possibly guided me like many others into wanting to be an artist/Illustrator, creative person. RIP Tony.

Diary Doodle Books

Evening. Happy New Year to you, the person reading my blog. It's been a while and it's not like I haven't done anything since my last post some months ago. Anyway it's a new year and I aim to keep things up to date a bit better this year and who knows people may actually stumble across it and have a read.

Because I liked the idea so much I've decided to have another go at sketching in my diary every day. I tried it last year and failed to keep up with it, but this years going to be different. Instead of posting every day It's going to be weekly. I've bought a lovely weekly diary and will endevour to see it through this year. You can check out how it's going so far by clicking here. A little update on some of the things I've been working on lately. First up I was asked to do a caricature of one of the characters from the new 'Get Minted' ad's, which you can see by clicking here. The caricature was for a press ad and will be printed over the next couple of days (20th-22nd March) in the 'Daily Star' not a paper I'm usually reading although it does have a good sports section after all the naked pictures and idle gossip.

Next up are some illustrations for the latest edition of 'Benhealth', a magazine for members of the Benenden Healthcare Society. I was asked to produce a few illustrations for a couple of stories. The first on healthy eating and foods from around the world, which included the cover for the magazine. The other was some nice little spot illustrations for an article on the new breed of computer games designed to train the brain. Lovely.

The 366 projects is going well and I'm already really excited about how the diary's going to look by the end of the year. It is ofcourse good to be back home around family and friends and my beloved CD collection again. I'm not sure my CD player quite agrees however. After leaving it with adoptive parents it's possibly felt a little neglected and is currently refusing to play the majority of the CD's which have been fed into the little machine since our return. I do ofcourse love my ipod but did miss looking at the CD artwork from time to time. Currently it's like visiting old friends although these ones are not in the mood to entertain at present. Oh well.

I've just updated the website with some new contact details and home page illustration. Still on the hunt for permanent accomodation so these details may change, phone numbers that is. My e-mail address is still the same so feel free to drop us an e-mail, it would be good to hear from you.

I grew up with this and similar landscapes, returning is like seeing them through new eyes.

The search for a new home, studio space and work continues. Hoping to have things set up soon and produce some new illustrations. Looking forward to seeing how the change of scene influences my work.

Nearly moving day, all our boxes have been picked up, which was a really stressful experience. Waiting 3 days for people to pull their finger out. Still have a few electrical items which will not work back in England. So trying to sell them in the apartment. Did the above illustration to try and entice some buyers. In your local newsagents now is the latest edition of Advance Photoshop magazine. I know a little bit about this photoshop, it plays a big part in the creation of my illustrations. And maybe I'm an advanced user in some peoples eyes. Anyway I was pretty chuffed when they asked me to contribute some illustrations for their fine publication. Check out pages 20-21 of issue 31, there you should find a nice double page spread featuring some of my favourite pieces of work.

Quick update on things. No response from Thumbtack Press so far so guess I've joined the 99% of submissions that don't make the cut. I'll try again sometime in the future and attempt to make the accepted 1%. Looking into other avenues with regards to prints, hopefully I'll have something sorted in the next few months.

My time of living and working in Boston is coming to an end. I'm moving back to England in July after a little jaunt down the west coast, starting in Seattle and finishing in Las Vegas. Hopefully I'll see and experience some inspiring things and do some good sketches to post on the blog.

The apartments full of boxes, plenty of packing still to do.

I've submitted a couple of my illustrations to Thumbtack Press for their consideration. If accepted I'll be able to create prints of the illustrations for sale through Thumbtack. They do have pretty high, I mean really high standards. In fact they reject 99% of the work submitted to them. So we'll just have to wait and see if they like them enough to add them to their gallery. I'll never know unless I give it a shot.

I've made a few little changes to my website, which I hope you'll agree have made it look a bit more aesthetically pleasing. Simplifying the navigation bar to just text, instead of the chunky boxes I feel looks and works much better. The illustrations have been shuffled around too, going in a more chronological order now. Also adding a couple of new pieces including a t-shirt design for bountee.com. I have a shirt on order, so I can check out the quality of the shirt and print. According to their jargon, they use a 'state of the art DTG (Direct To Garment) printing process'. Not vinyl or iron on transfers and is directly comparable to screen printing, which sounds good. so I'll let you know how things look when my shirt arrives.

March update

Updated my website with some new illustrations I worked on through February. First up is a portrait of Irish singer songwriter David Kitt. Secondly is a portrait of new Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, and thirdly a portrait of pro cyclist Tyler Hamilton. Portraits is an area I'm looking to take my illustrations and will be working on a few more over the coming months.

Life drawing's going well and is possibly the most relaxing 3 hours of my week at the moment. Love just being shut off from everything else going on in the world and focusing on the drawings. Enjoying using the charcoals and may look to use some colour in the next couple of sessions, oil pastels maybe. I don't know, we'll see. Check back on Friday when I'll post the latest drawings.

From last Friday morning. I've overlaid the warm up sketches into one image. Like to drawing as many one minute poses as I can on one sheet of paper not only for economic reasons but also to create some kind of abstract and more dynamic image. May look at adding some tone or colour to these in the future.

Tea and sketchbook

Found a nice little spiral bound sketchbook which a friend bought me for my birthday. Decided to take it and myself out for a cup of tea this morning and watch the world go by on Mass Ave for an hour.

I think that's what I'm going to use it for, 'tea break sketches.' Will ofcourse be going to different places, not just drawing the same place. Although that does sound quite interesting too, see how the scene changes over the weeks and months. So maybe I will try and sit in the same place each week with my brew and draw the world go by from the window of Starbuks on Mass Ave.

The usual page of warm ups followed by a half hour pose. The third drawing was just over an hour, good to have a little more time to add some tone and details. Going to be working more on those things next week.

Had a little spare time...

this week and have been updating my website for February. I'm pretty happy with the quality of the work on there and how the website is working. Still I feel I'm lacking a little direction and focus in the kind of work I would like to be doing. Kind of an evaluation of 2006 and planning what I want to achieve and aspire to in 07. I'm really enjoying the life drawing classes and think they are going to add something to my illustration work, improved observation and drawing. So we'll see how things progress.

Started work on an illustration of Irish singer songwriter David Kitt, these are some of the first sketches.

This weeks life drawings, female model this time for a change. Not too happy with the first 2 half hour studies but think the third one was coming together nicely. Would have been nice to have had a little more time to add some more tone and detail.

Guild promo postcard

This week I completed an illustration for the Boston Chapter of the Graphic Artists Guild to help promote a series of seminars they are hosting over the next 6 months. The illustration will be featured on postcards, banners at the events and on the Guilds website. I'll post it to my website and this blog when it's printed and sent out. The first seminar takes place a week on Friday, 26th January on the subject of promotion in the digital age. More details should be available on the Guilds website.

Life drawing

Started a life drawing class at the Museum of Fine Art here in Boston last week. These are the drawings from the first class. Started off with some quick one minute poses to start with to loosen up sort of speak.

We then moved onto a couple of longer studies, the first for 30 minutes the second was just over an hour. Really good to do some observational drawing opposed to my usual illustration work which rely on a certain amount of imagination.

It's a ten week course so will be posting a new set of drawings each week. Should be good to see how things develop.

Happy new website. It's been re-vamped with a splash of colour, gone is the grey background and frankly I'm glad to see the back of it. I've been working on this re-design for the past few months and it appears to be running fine and dandy so far. There's some new work on there too including 'The Owl & The Pussycat' and a couple of pieces I completed before Christmas for Sundance Publishing. More new work will be added soon, I'm feeling confident, 2007 is going to be a good year.

Just finished another assignment for Sundance Publishing, producing 4 illustrations for one of their short educational stories. They've kept me busy the past month or so. I’ll post the finals to the web site once there signed off. Speaking of the web site I’m busy updating it, well kind off redesigning it and plan to re-launch it in January or maybe before, if I get it finished earlier.

I was featured on the Coroflot network on the 8th December which has introduced a few more people to my work which is cool. Christmas cards have been sent out so keep your eyes open for a bright orange envelope from the postie.
